About Cooksville

Cooksville is a neighborhood located in the city of  Mississauga. It was initially named Harrisville after its first settler, Daniel Harris. But when Harris returned to the United States, another prominent resident named Jacob Cook bought 100 acres of land, and the village was officially renamed in his honor.

Two notable disasters hit Cooksville which put the area’s growth on hold, the Great Fire of 1852 and a severe tornado on June 1923 which destroyed a vast amount of rural farmhouses around town. Growth was seen in the late 1800s and early 1900s when winemaking, oil refining, and brick making started to flourish. Since then Cooksville has been known as a center for civic, industrial and commercial interests.

Cooksville has a diverse population, but over half are identified as minorities. South Asian and Arab textile/clothing stores, restaurants, and groceries are abundant in the area. Afro-Carribean take-out restaurants and barber shops are also seen which caters to most of the black community in the area.

Many people find Cooksville an attractive location to live in because of its central location and ease of access to big shopping malls, highways and the GO Transit making it easier to reach downtown Toronto in just minutes.

Interesting facts about Cooksville:

– It is only minutes away from Square One Shopping Center, Canada’s second largest shopping center with 360 stores and services.

–  Harland Sanders, founder of the famous chicken restaurant chain KFC used to live in the area when he was supervising the introduction of his franchise in Canada
