About Parkdale
Parkdale was founded in the 1850’s as an independent colony within York County. It was later on incorporated as a village in the year 1879 and amalgamated with Toronto 10 years later in the year 1889.
For the first half of the 20th century, Parkdale was considered as an upper-income residential area. It housed some remarkable mansions but not until the year 1955 when the Gardiner Expressway was built. The southern part of the village was demolished as well as the Sunnyside Amusement Park. A barrier was also created between the village and the north shore of Lake Ontario. Apartment building construction increasingly followed, replacing blocks of homes into blocks of apartment buildings.
The demographic composition changed notably. Today, Parkdale is considered a working-class neighborhood which includes a high proportion of lower income families and immigrants.
Main streets include:
– Queen Street West
– King Street West
– Dufferin Street
– Lansdowne Avenue
– Jameson Avenue
