Have you heard the term “forever chemicals”? It refers to a group of man-made substances known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)—chemicals that persist in the environment and the human body for long periods of time. As research evolves, we are gaining a clearer understanding of how ongoing exposure to PFAS may affect both human health and environmental well-being.
In this report, the Toronto Functional Medicine Centre explores what PFAS are, where they are commonly found, and why awareness matters. What exactly are PFAS?
PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a large group of synthetic chemicals often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they persist in the environment and the human body. PFAS are valued for their resistance to heat, water, and oil, which has led to their widespread use in consumer products and industrial applications.

Because PFAS break down very slowly, they can accumulate in the body over time, where they have been linked to disruptions in hormonal balance and immune function, as well as broader metabolic and inflammatory effects. Unfortunately, new PFAS are in production and scientists are attempting to stay abreast of the latest data. The fact that PFAS are incessantly manufactured is alarming, as findings show that children and pregnant women are vulnerable to these chemical effects.
