How mold spores affect the human body
Mold is needed for our ecosystem to flourish. However, excessive indoor mold can lead to infections or allergic reactions in some cases.
The toxic load of mold can grow indoors, especially in moist areas. In particular, it is the spores of mold that can cause us to get sick, and these can be inhaled, ingested, or touched. “The spores are so small it would take a robust filtration system to eliminate them all from the airstream which can’t be easily done in many buildings,” reports the University of Houston. These environmental toxins can enter a home or building through an open door or window or even dragged in from your shoes. If mold happens to settle in a moist area, it can begin to excessively thrive.
Mold exposure symptoms are similar to a cold or allergies, which may include stuffiness, red and itchy eyes, a runny nose, coughing, wheezing, and throat irritations – hence, mold-related illnesses may not always be initially considered for diagnoses. Additionally, everyone reacts differently to contacts with dangerous spores. For some people, reactions happen instantly or are delayed. Excessive mold can potentially affect long-term health, too, as overexposures are linked to brain fog, asthma, weakened immune function, and mood disorders.
