Lead Poisoning: A Q&A Guide from Our IV Therapy Toronto Lounge

Canadian laws are in place to prevent excessive contacts with lead. Nevertheless, “Lead is an environmental contaminant that is considered a major public health concern due to its effects on various body systems, such as the neurological, cardiovascular, immune and renal systems,” reports an article from Hygiene and Environmental Health Advances.

This toxic metal is continually used worldwide for making products malleable and/or resistant to rust. It isn’t biodegradable either, which means levels of lead can become ‘hoarded’ in certain settings – which can contribute to adverse health effects. 

From the air we breathe in to handling consumer products, various everyday items can be laced with lead. Lead poisoning can form within months or years of excessive contacts, or it can happen quickly from an acute exposure. Common Questions and Answers About Lead Poisoning

Q. How do we become exposed to lead? 

A. High amounts of lead can be inhaled, ingested or absorbed through skin. Exposures can be from: 

    • Living in homes constructed before 1978
    • Stained glasses
    • Glazed ceramics
    • From peeling off lead paint
    • Piping
    • Burning materials that contain lead (i.e. recycling processes)
    • Contaminated soil, air, water, food
    • Ammunition
    • Jewellery and toys

You may be heavily exposed if you work in mines or manufacturing industries. Children are susceptible to lead poisoning due to their precocious nature of tasting and touching things, as well as crawling around in dirt and on carpet. 

Q. What are the symptoms of lead poisoning?

A. Symptoms may vary between children and adults. Young kids are sensitive to lead poisoning due to their developing bodies; this means that excessive lead contacts can potentially cause long-term effects in children, such as learning issues. However, dangerous outcomes can happen in adults, too, such as kidney damage and seizures. The table below highlights some symptoms in kids and grownups:

Q. Can lab tests detect lead poisoning? 

A. Urine and blood tests can measure for lead. At the Toronto Functional Medicine Centre, our comprehensive lab tests may catch details that were not detected by conventional tests. Testing for nutrient deficiencies may be integral for tailoring a treatment plan. Some nutritional deficits – such as calcium and iron – can exacerbate the effects of lead poisoning. Treating these shortcomings with oral vitamins and/or intravenous vitamin drips may help flush heavy metals out of the body.  

Q. How can it be treated with functional medicine and IV drip treatments? 

A. The functional medicine model emphasizes on adapting a treatment plan for individual needs. This involves understanding the patient as a distinct entity, recognizing medical history, genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors. Regarding lead poisoning, targeted therapies may include: 

    • Chelation therapy: This treatment uses a chemical agent that’s either consumed orally (pill format) or, if necessary, as an IV drip. The chelating agent used is usually ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and when it’s in the body, it can draw lead molecules away from body tissues. The collected metals are then eliminated through urination. 
    • Dietary modifications: An antioxidant-rich diet with leafy greens and soluble fibres can help support various liver functions, such as detoxification. Also, opt for organic foods if you can, as some conventional produce may have been exposed to soil containing lead. 
    • Complementary nutrient therapy: Chelation therapy may lead to eliminating some healthy amounts of copper, zinc, and manganese from the body; may have to measure these nutrient levels prior to and following the use of chelating agents and consider supplementation. Certain oral supplements and IV therapy can be taken to further improve detoxification processes, such as glutathione (for lowering oxidative stress); probiotics to help with binding lead; and vitamin C therapy (oral or intravenous ascorbic acid) to foster antioxidant effects. 
    • Additional lifestyle modifications: You’ll have to scrutinize what you do, eat, or touch on a daily basis for reducing lead exposures. Changes may involve wearing protective gear on the job; avoiding certain dishes; or using air purifiers, but this calls for a detailed discussion with your functional health provider. 

Q. What if lead poisoning is not treated? 

A. When left untreated, lifelong consequences can occur. In adults, it may lead to kidney damage, blood pressure issues, infertility, chronic fatigue syndrome, as well as obstacles with concentration and cognitive function. In children, untreated lead poisoning can harm their reproductive organs and potentially impede brain function (i.e. lowered IQ, antisocial behaviors, trouble learning new things). 

Prevention and Next Steps

Actions can be taken to prevent excessive exposures to lead. For example, regularly clean surfaces at home from dust; don’t drink from crystal dishes because they may contain lead; filter tap water prior to drinking it; and if you work in a factory, change your clothes before coming home.
